Cambodia is under recovery from
the brutal years of Khmer Rouge rule. The years of fear
and loathing are over. Peace has come back to this beautiful
yet blighted land after three decades of war. Tourism
is taking off and a journey to this little kingdom is
still one of Asia’s genuine adventures. |
| Highlights |
Phnom Penh
In 1430s Angkor was abandoned and Phnom Penh was chosen
as the site of new Cambodian capital. Phnom Penh sits
at the confluence of the Mekong, Tonle Bassac and Tonle
Sap rivers. |
The Silver Pagoda,
so named because the floor is covered with over 5000
silver tiles weighing 1kg each, is also known as Wat
Preah Keo(Pagoda of Emerald Buddha) It was constructed
of wood in 1892 during the rule of King Norodom, who
was apparently inspired by Bangkok’s Wat Phra
Keo, and was rebuilt in 1962. |
The National Museum
of Cambodia is home to the world’s finest collection
of Khmer sculpture housed in a graceful terracotta structure
of traditional built in 1917-20. Some highlights include
the eight-armed statue of Vishnu from the 6th or 7th
century AD, the statue of Shiva(c866-77) and the sublime
statue of Jayavarman VII seated(c1181-218).
The Central Market is filled with shops
and souvenirs to bring back home. |
Siem
Reap
It is the gateway to Cambodia’s spiritual and cultural
heartbeat, the temples of Angkor. Siem Reap is just north
of the western extent of Tonle Sap Lake, with old French
shop-houses, shady tree-lined boulevards and a gentle
winding river are remnants of the past. The
temples of Angkor are the heart and soul of
the kingdom of Cambodia, a source of inspiration and
national pride to all Khmers as they struggle to rebuild
their lives after years of terror and trauma. Angkor
Wat and those in and around the walled city of Angkor
Thom- were built during the classical age. |
Angkor Wat , the
city (which became a ) pagoda, was not only the grandest
and most sublime of all the Khmer temples, but also
a city in its own right. It was built during the reign
of Suryavarman II, in the first half of the 12th century,
both as the capital and the State Temple dedicated to
Vishnu. |
ANGKOR THOM, One
of the largest of all Khamer cities, was founded by
Jayavarman VII and probably remained the capital until
the 17th centuary. The first sight of this monumental
construction is the magnificent S Gate, which is always
attracted by the tourists, with its towers with four
faces pointing in each of the cardinal directions and
elephants, preceded by the no less impressive avenue
of Gods and Asuras lining the bridge across the moat. |
The Bayon , ,
the state Temple of Jayavarman VII and his immediate
successors, also know and the Temple mountain, is one
of the most enigmatic and powerful religious constructions
in the world. The temple is extremely complex both in
terms of its structure and meaning,, having passed through
different religious phases from Pantheon of the Gods,
Hindu worship and Buddhism. |
Ta Prohm of late
12th to 13th centuries is one of the major temples of
Jayaraman VII. The complexity of its layout is increased
by its partly collapsed state, with trees interlaced
among the ruins, is also known as the Jungle Temple.
|
Elephant Terrace of
late 12th century with its long terrace at the heart
of Angkor Thom, looking our over the Royal square, was
used for viewing public ceremonies and was the base
for the King’s grand audience hall with lines
of elephants on either end of the retaining walls. |
